She is home! I cant believe I actually did it. I bought my first bike. My lude has a playmate now! I couldn't have asked for a better pick. 1996 Yamaha FZR600. Today was one of those "days of firsts". It reminds me of how I felt when I found, and went to buy my prelude. Now, its time to start acquiring proper riding gear...

Kinja'd!!!

The yoshimura exhaust is so sexy. I finally have something loud! And something that sounds awesome!

Ill take better pics later but im gonna crack open the service manual and read it because I can. Then go through the manual a couple times... Don't judge me.

Kinja'd!!!

Just look at those eyes! Its dorky, but its my kind of dorky!

If anyone has any recommendations on riding gear, please let me know. Ill be doing my own homework in the meantime, but what do you folks of TwoWheelsGood like?

The looks of it continue to grow on me. And for 50K miles this thing is cleaner than my prelude relatively speaking. You wouldnt even know its been driven that much. Thanks!

Thanks, i am finding i have a thing for 90's styling. Something about it is more attractive than older or newer things.

Congrats and have fun!! I've bought from Cycle Gear and motorcycle superstore in the past, both good experiences. If there are stores/dealers near you, definitely try on helmets and jackets to figure out your sizing before ordering just to save yourself the hassle of exchanges.

EDIT: and I think you said your sister would be riding too? If she's looking for gear as well, the only things that typically need to be in women's specific sizing are gloves and jackets, and sometimes not even jackets if you have a slimmer figure. Also, if she wears low rise jeans... she's probably going to want midrise or a long jacket on a sportbike :P

I am not a motorcycle fan, but the FZR's are amazing. I'm a bit jealous, and I don't generally get jealous (or have much in the way of feelings towards bikes).

I ADORE these! the front is just plain awesome. Not a fan of the square tail, but talk about a part that is insanely easy to change

I kinda like the square tail light. It flows well with the sharp edges on this bike. Parts seem to be plentiful, thats for sure.

I have a self, and wife imposed ban on two wheeled motorized vehicles. I enjoy acceleration far too much. And handling. Much more than outright speed. So the FZR's are perfect for that, and would probably be choices 1, 2 and 3. But... I'm both poor and self-restricted (small kids would be the cause of both of those).

When I was here I asked about the 400 that the guy had, but he wasn't ready to part ways with it. He also knew what he had, and it needed a bit of work, but it was a 400 and I was pretty damned impressed (by everything in that garage).

Great bike. First one? Just remember that if you survive the first 2 years of riding, you will probably ride for the rest of your life. Never assume you are seen. I have been riding for more years than you probably have been alive and I had my first accident in December. It can happen anytime. Ride aware and safely my friend and no matter how short the trip or how hot it is, always wear your gear. Again, nice bike.

Thats one impressive garage! And that 400 looks pretty spiffy! Im glad you showed me that because i now want to paint the mirrors white to match like the one in your picture. I am curious after initial looking why the 400 is more expensive than a 600?

Id keep asking every once in a while to show your interest in that FZR. You never know, he may want his space back in his garage and will give you a darn good price for the bike. Which was exactly my situation. They guy just got an R1 and his shed was now full and he wanted it gone. So you never know. Id drop a line from time to time.

Who said you had to drive it if you got it and fixed it up. Working on it and rebuilding it is half the fun. At least i would think so. Or keep it as a track bike?

Thanks. Yep its the first one. I will certainly be adjusting myself into a whole new mindset of driving on the road. Im saving up money to take the bike classes, the MSF things. I want to learn more on how I can be safe. Its important to me to do that. And gear always. I dont want to go anywhere without something that could have been the one item making a difference between life and death.

Any good advice on things to read up on in the meantime to prepare for my first class next month? (its the course you take in order to get the motorcycle license).

Thanks for the info. I just read the edit, and ill let her know. We are actually pretty close in height and weight. Im hoping maybe we can split a helmet. But im not holding out. Shes definitely gonna need a jacket and ill let her know about the midrise and long jacket thing haha. Thanks!

Not much. The MSF courses are great and I take follow ups every few years. the one thing I do is always practice evasive moves when riding. That way you are ready and know how the bike will react if they are needed. Practice extreme braking as well so you know how the bike will react. Front and rear wheel lock ups are scary and you need to know where the limits are. One thing I tell everyone is always ride with your high beam on in the daytime. Many headlights low beams are adjusted for night time and to not blinding oncoming traffic. They can be pretty useless in the day as far as a beacon to other traffic. Always ride close to the left edge of the lane on 2 land roads and in the left lane on multi-lane roads, if possible. More chance of being seen by people pulling onto the road and more room to take evasive action if someone does not see you and pulls out from a side road. Lots of little stuff that you will learn in the safety courses. Good luck my riding Oppo friend.

Well, i wasnt advertising per say. I was asking around locally, and looking, and the fzr came to be from a 'friend of a friend' type of deal.

Out of curiosity what were you asking on that bike? That is if you were inferring about selling it.

No, that's the best kind of "find".. Got mine the same way, knew someone at a Honda motorsports dealer..

I am asking $5500 for the bike with all the adds.. Trying to break even on the extras.

Good luck on the FZR... Wonderful machine indeed.

Dang, thats actually ~4 times more than what i spent on this bike. I would have had to pass. I bet that honda is a top though. It looks pretty sweet, especially that big ol exhaust.

Thanks, Im happy i can enjoy such a quality machine. Good luck with yours! Moving on to a bigger bike?

I always rode with a Bell helmet, Arai or Shoei are also good. My jacket was an Icon that could be switched from summer to winter or wet weather depending on needs. Gloves are important, get a summer set and a winter set or you'll sweat/freeze your fingers off. Boots or shoes that cover the ankle are also important.

Remember, everyone driving around you is trying to kill you, ride accordingly.

thoughts on HJC helmets? My concern with them is that they seem to be mostly DOT and not snell. Thanks for the info!

Kinja'd!!! Reigntastic > MountainCommand

Kinja'd!!!0

Actually I think I still own an HJC that I got when I purchased my '09 250r (came with the bike, never used, I already had a few helmets and gear), but all my Bell helmets were SNELL rated and that is the far more meaningful rating. Some half shells have DOT rating, it doesn't mean shit.

Kinja'd!!! MountainCommand > Reigntastic
05/04/2014 at 14:19

Kinja'd!!!0

We have some HJC dirt bike helmets, but their snell rating is 2000, so 14 years out of date... No go. Im gonna go full face helmet, I dont need to be exposing my face to more stuff than i need. As far as ive read, DOT is just the govt mandated rating/testing system. Usually anything like that shouldnt be trusted alone, imo.

What do you suggest for boots? Do i need boots without laces? Or can i get by for a bit with my all purpose over the ankle outdoor boots?

Kinja'd!!! Reigntastic > MountainCommand
05/04/2014 at 14:46

Kinja'd!!!0

Definitely would encourage a full faced helmet myself.

I rode in some green high tops when I was in town (they would cover ankles), and something kind of like this http://www.alpinestars.com/s-mx-1-boot#.U… but an older style whenever I would ride long distance. My laces were always tucked in on my riding shoes, just be very careful with what footwear you choose when riding, no flip flops or long laces.

You could probably get by with outdoor boots, but the loss of dexterity with those would be a deterrent, I would tend to prefer athletic shoes over heavy boots.

Well, i did some more shopping around today and i think i may go with these guys actually.

http://www.revzilla.com/motorcycle/tcx…

Kinja'd!!!

I just dont know if i want to go with the semi high, or the high top.

Kinja'd!!!

Opinions or thoughts on gloves? Obviously i will wear them, but i mean are those 150$ gloves the only right way, or keeping it simple with knuckle and wrist protection okay?

Kinja'd!!! Reigntastic > MountainCommand
05/04/2014 at 18:24

Kinja'd!!!0

Either of those boots will work fine, I would get semi high for additional mobility. The other boots would be a pain to walk in.

Gloves aren't too big a deal as long as they fit right. I always had cheap gloves, generally replaced them once every couple of years.
